Spotlight Minervois

With the name of the appellation descending from the Greek goddess Minerva, you know these wines have a lot of beauty and history to live up to. The Minervois appellation is located in Western part of the Languedoc in the South West of France. The area is mostly known for red wines, with the most common varieties Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre, Carignan and Cinsaut. The whites of the region are Vermentino, Roussanne, Marsanne and Grenache Blanc. Minervois was granted its AOC status in 1985 and since then the wine has increased in quality and recognition dramatically. Below enjoy some fantastic Minervois wines that Andreas has had the pleasure of tasting.

DOMAINE DE THOLOMIES 2013
France – Languedoc/Roussillon – Minervois La Liviniere – Red

89 Points
“Very dense palate, good degree of concentration. I think it’s a fine balance between the tannins, that are grainy, almost like chocolate powder, giving a lift to that sweet opulent fruit. It’s obviously a rich texture, but I still think it keeps within the frame of a balanced and fresh wine.”

CHATEAU FÉLINES – RÉSERVE 2010
France – Languedoc/Roussillon – Minervois La Liviniere – Red

86 Points
“Good concentration, good density, it still appears a bit young, just like the colour and the nose; but it’s showing a good structure, I think the tannins are starting to integrate. It’s a fairly high level of extraction, so you obviously need to wait a little bit for this level of drinkability.”

DOMAINE LA REZE 2013
France – Languedoc/Roussillon – Minervois – Red

87 Points
“We have sweet fruit but the palate is still classically dry and well restrained. I would place this somewhere in the medium-bodied category, as it’s not too opulent or rich; good degree of freshness, very pure fruit, modern fruit with a clean profile, dark cherry, blackberry.”

JEANJEAN – LA CÔTE QUI DESCEND 2012
France – Languedoc/Roussillon – Minervois La Liviniere – Red
90 Points
“It’s in a nicely made style, with reasonable oak, with a good degree of freshness. I like theses layers of spices again, those dark berries with the ground pepper, with the clove, some ginger; very fresh and digest on the palate. Good length.”

GERARD BERTRAND – LE VIALA 2012
France – Languedoc/Roussillon – Minervois La Liviniere – Red
93 Points
“Very multilayered palate, I love this combination of dark red berries with those spices, slightly meaty core, freshness all along the way, the oak is very well integrated, and it’s a very long finish, very colourful, with lots of things going on, and it finishes off with that discreet pepperiness, spiciness and meatiness, with that lovely dark ripe blackberry fruit and a dash of my beloved black truffle that emerged so nicely on the nose.”

DOMAINE PUJOL – LA MITRE DE L’EVÊQUE 2012
France – Languedoc/Roussillon – Minervois – Red
86 Points
“Rich and warm palate, high concentration of fruit, there’s some amount of chocolate coming from the roasted wood, some vanilla. Very warm, quite high ripeness; we feel quite elevated alcohol here, sweet fruity character.”

CHATEAU RIVIÈRE – EN MINERVOIS 2013
France – Languedoc/Roussillon – Minervois – Red
85 Points
“Palate has medium weight, it has a rather soft texture, juicy, with well-integrated tannins, well-maintained freshness. Medium-long finish with sweet red fruit and some peppery notes lingering over the finish.”
