Spotlight Mendoza

Spotlight Mendoza

Mendoza is easily the most popular and the largest wine region in Argentina. Malbec is king of the region and Argentina is credited to preserving the varietal after phylloxera hit Europe. Malbec is best known from the high altitude regions of Lujan de Cuyo and Uco Valley.

The wines of Mendoza are very distinct; bold but approachable, full of dark juicy character, like wild berries, plum and, of course, some spice. Consumers know Mendoza wines to offer a lot of values, which has increased the production and growth in exporting around the world.

Last month Andreas had the honor of tasting almost a hundred wines from Argentina and he was very impressed with the quality and diversity of the wines. Check out some of the highest scorings wines below.

Val de Flores – 2008
Argentina - Mendoza – Malbec – Red
93 Points
With a fine level of maturity, I would say in terms of that spiciness, a hint of that smoke and those earthy truffle like aromas. Well built, dense, with an approaching complexity. Long and opulent finish.”

Mariflor – 2012
Argentina – Mendoza – Malbec – Red
93 Points
“I think it is multi-layered as well, so beyond that intense fruit there is a fine level of spiciness, like black pepper, plum, some ginger, adding a lot of freshness on the finish.”

Chakana – Estate Selection – 2013
Argentina - Mendoza - Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah – Red
93 Points
I think this has excellent drinkability, certainly a wine with potential for further aging. But multi-layered with a really long finish and a certain level of complexity. I have to buy a bottle of this I think.”

Bodegas Caro - Amancaya - Gran Reserva – 2012
Argentina - Mendoza - Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon – Red
93 Points
I like the freshness in this one as well. It feels like a warm climate style, well restrained with a good level of freshness, rounded texture, very nice hints of cassis on the finish. Good length, very nice example with superb drinkability right now.”

Abremundos – Octava Bassa – 2011
Argentina – Mendoza – Malbec – Red
92 Points
“I like it for this attractive and sweet red fruit. There are layers there. There are fine spices, dried spices like clove and pepper and then those sweet raspberries, apricot.”

Mascota Vineyards - Unanime – 2011
Argentina - Mendoza - Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Cabernet Franc – Red
92 Points
“It is a good length with a certain complexity and I would talk about a really fine drinkability for today, but doubtlessly with a potential for many more years in the cellar.”

Bodega y Viñedos Monteviejo – Petite Fleur – 2012
Argentina – Mendoza – Malbec – Red
92 Points
Really good length, with a certain complexity. I definitely like those layers of those fine spices with very lush and elegant fruit.”
