Best Wine of the World Chianti

Best Wine of the World Chianti

The Chianti region covers a vast area of Tuscany and is arguably one of the most popular Italian wines. The area is immense, offering everything from light simple versions, to dense complex and of tremendous quality. Chianti Classico is recognized with a pink label featuring the Black Rooster seal. To feature this label, the wine has to be at least 80% Sangiovese, a minimum of 12% of alcohol and aged for 12 months. A Chianti Classico Riserva needs to be 80% Sangiovese, a minimum of 12.5% alcohol and aged for 24 months with at least 3 months in bottle. The newest distinction is the Chianti Classico Gran Selezione and signifies the wine is at least 80% Sangiovese, a minimum of 13% alcohol, from the producers own vineyard and aged 30 months with at least 3 months in bottle.

According to Andreas Larsson, these classifications help draw distinctions in such a large area. Andreas’s current highest rated Chianti wines are below. To him, these wines show the typicity of the Sangiovese grape variety. A style of Chianti with a bit more flesh on the bone. “I think they have a nice drinkability when they are fairly young. Yet, they clearly have a potential for aging and development.”

Barone Ricasoli Castello di Brolio is currently our highest ranked Chianti wine from Andreas at 93 points. According to the owner Francesco Ricasoli, this wine is their highest expression of elegance and personality and is and understand beauty. The Sangiovese is grown on different soils on the property and each parcel is harvest and vinified separately. According to Francesco, “only after a long aging in oak do we decide which cuvee will be used for this wine. We are proud of Castello di Brolio because it is a perfect balance between a unique and challenging grape variety such as Sangiovese and a modern, clean, sharp, oenological technique.  The result is a contemporary wine with an ancient soul, not replicable elsewhere, a true terroir wine!”

CASTELLO VICCHIOMAGGIO – LA PRIMA GRAN SELEZIONE 2012

VILLA MONTEPALDI – TAGLIAFUNE 2010
Italy – Tuscany – Chianti Classico - Red
