Beaujolais Nouveau Has Arrived

The third Thursday of November marks the release of the much celebrated Beaujolais Nouveau or the newly harvested wine from the Beaujolais region near Burgundy. This fun annual tradition symbolizes the completed harvest and the beginning of the holiday season. The wine had a cult-like following for over a hundred years in France and only began exporting to other countries in the 1960’s.Celebrations will take place all over the world this weekend in honor of this light, fruity, red wine.

Only half of the production in Beaujolais is used for the Beaujolais Nouveau wine, so there is much more to the region than just the third Thursday festivities. There are 10 Grand Crus in Beaujolais and 38 Beaujolais Villages. The region is mostly focused on the Gamay varietal, which makes up almost 90% of the plantings. Other varietals would include Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and some Pinot Noir. New or old, be sure to try this region and take part of the tradition this week.

Villa Ponciago – Grande Cuvée La Roche Muriers 2013
France – Beaujolais – Fleurie – Red
88 Points
Very juicy and drinkable style of this Burgundian lighter style, still with character and finish on the length. I like it.”

Gál Vineyard – Kékfrankos Rosé- 2014
Hungary – Kunság – Rosé
85 Points
“I get some notes of sour red cherry, sour plum. It still feels very young, almost like freshly fermented grape must; but I like that vital, fresh and crisp sensation.”

Cantina Gabriele – Dolcemente 2014
Italy – Lazio – Kosher – Chardonnay – Malvasia – Semi Sweet White
88 Points
I really like that this sweetness is balanced by a really vibrant and fresh acidity. Then we have a lot of those ripe, fruity, notes coming through there; ripe citrus, pear and that grapey, floral element.”

Georges Duboeuf – Prestige 2009
France – Beaujolais – Moulin-à-Vent – Red
91 Points
Rather elegant style with a certain complexity now, with a multi-layered finish, it has a long good length, a persistent palate. Very delicious in a gastronomic style.”

Charles Mignon – Cuvée Comte De Marne NV
France – Champagne – Grand Cru – Brut – White
87 Points
“But good expression of fruit, good expression of ripe fruit particularly, in my mind more of a Pinot with this one, but it has a good length and good structure. Something I would happily drink.”

Chateau De La Chaize – Cuvée Vieilles Vignes 2013
France – Beaujolais – Brouilly – Red
87 Points
“A certain pepperiness, white pepper, juicy red fruit again like freshly-crushed red berries. Good fluidity, good juiciness and drinkability, with a medium towards long finish..”

Celler De Capçanes – La Flor Del Flor De Primavera – Old Vines 2013
Spain – Montsant – Kosher – Garnacha – Red
90 Points
Good freshness as well, backing up that dried fruit. It is obviously a high degree of ripeness, it feels more like a warm climate style. I like the freshness in this one, it also has a very good length.”
